About
Licensing that lives in your own account
OwnLicense is a licensing system you install in your own Cloudflare account, charging through your own Stripe. We're building it so that small software makers can sell outside the app stores without handing their customers to a middleman.
What OwnLicense is
A licensing server that runs as a Worker in your Cloudflare account, with its database (D1) and its signing keys also in your account. It issues keys, activates devices, renews subscriptions, sends emails from your domain and gives your customers a portal. Payments go through your Stripe account.
Around it, a central service that would add what a Worker can't do well on its own: stats with no personal data, alerts when something breaks, signed updates, the installer and the SDKs. That central service doesn't exist yet.
Why we're building it
Selling software through a merchant of record is convenient, but your customer list, your keys and your payment history end up in someone else's account. If the provider shuts down, changes its prices or closes your account, you lose more than a payment method. DevMate shut down in 2019, and many Mac apps had to migrate their licenses in a hurry.
We think a maker should keep control of three things: their customers' data, their Stripe account and their ability to keep selling if a provider disappears. That's the whole idea: what's yours stays in your account, and we provide the parts that are hard to build and maintain alone.
Who's behind it
Color Vivo Internet, SL, a small Spanish company that makes desktop apps for Windows and Mac, and David Carrero, who leads the project. We work from Madrid and Herencia (Ciudad Real), Spain.
We built this licensing system to sell our own desktop apps outside the app stores, with our own Stripe account and our customers in our own Cloudflare account, and our apps use it today. OwnLicense is the idea of offering the same system to other makers.
Our principles
Your data in your account
Your customers' emails, devices and IPs, and your Stripe and signing keys, live in your Worker. The central service only ever receives counts and a signed heartbeat.
0% commission from us
We never touch your money. Your customers pay your Stripe account and Stripe charges you its fees directly.
Source under ELv2
You get the source of your Worker to read and change it. The Elastic License 2.0 only forbids reselling it as a service and bypassing the license check.
Nothing stops if we do
No kill switches: if you stop paying or we disappear, your Worker keeps selling, activating and renewing.
